Indian rivers are broadly classified into two major groups :
- Himalayan Rivers
- Peninsular Rivers
The Himalayan rivers are different from Peninsular river in many ways like :
- Himalayan rivers are perennial ( i.e. they flow throughout the year) whereas Peninsular Rivers are seasonal.
- Himalayan Rivers are young whereas Peninsular Rivers are matured.
- Himalayan Rivers are engaged in high erosion activity whereas Peninsular Rivers are engaged in less erosion activity.
- Himalayan rivers have deep and longer courses whereas Peninsular Rivers have shallow and shorter courses.
The Himalayan and Peninsular River system have an important role in the economy of India as most of the Indian population is engaged in agricultural activities. These rivers also provide means of transportation and help in developing hydro electricity.
